Q: How did your experience working with some award-winning celebrities shape your work and approach?

A: Working with and learning from award-winning celebrities and makeup artists has really helped me simplify my approach to makeup. I understand the basic foundation of Makeup Artistry, like color theory, contouring and highlighting, and use that knowledge to create beautiful complexions and sculpt my clients' faces correctly. Having that knowledge also means I can carry a lighter load of makeup instead of having 100 colors in my kit.

Q: What’s your favorite part of being a makeup artist?

A: I have to name a few! I get to meet so many different clients from all walks of life. I get to travel. I’ve been an artist since I was young—drawing, coloring and painting—so I'm lucky to have found a profession that I enjoy, "painting" faces.

Q: How do you balance client preferences with new trends and techniques, especially when someone isn’t sure what they want?

A: It’s important to have an in-person consultation with my clients to ask guiding questions to help them discover what they like and don’t like. Looking at inspiration photos can help, but because some trends will work, and some won’t, we have to do a trial to see what the client ends up liking. Makeup can be wiped off and we can start again, so I try to set the tone that it should be a fun discovery session.

Q: What advice would you give a bride who hasn't worked with a makeup artist before?

A: If you haven’t worked with a makeup artist before, you should check their portfolio and reach out to them if you like their work. Be open to having a new experience of getting your makeup done by a professional makeup artist. Take your time during the makeup session to check yourself out, take photos, and ask yourself if you feel good. Ask as many questions as you like. We are here to support you.

Sometimes it takes a few days and more than one trial to realize what you feel comfortable with and that’s okay. As long as you have an open mind and good communication with your artist, you’ll have a successful consultation.
