On February 17, 2026, we’re welcoming the Year of the Fire Horse, which is predicted to be a year of energy and passion. Last celebrated in 1966, the Fire Horse combines the independent nature of the Horse and the passionate and persistent traits of the Fire element.

Why is it called the Year of the Horse?

For the Chinese Lunar New Year, each year in a 12-year cycle represents a different animal, each with its own meaning. The animals are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. The animals are listed in the order in which they crossed the finish line, according to the Chinese tale.

As the story goes, in ancient China, the Jade Emperor held a race among all animals (only 12 were involved) to name each of the zodiac years. The Horse was nearly sixth place, but it didn’t realize the Snake had coiled itself around its hoof. When the Horse was nearly at the finish line, the snake uncoiled itself, frightening the horse and taking sixth place, leaving the Horse as seventh in the zodiac cycle.

While this story comes from Chinese tradition, many  Asian countries that follow the Lunar Calendar use the same zodiac system, with some variations. In Vietnam, instead of having the Year of the Rabbit, they have the Year of the Cat. Vietnam also changes the Ox to the Water Buffalo. Japan uses the Wild Boar rather than the Pig.

Personality Traits of the Horse

If you were born in 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014, or 2026, your Zodiac sign is the Horse. You may identify as confident, energetic, and independent. Also, like horses themselves, those born in the Year of the Horse are loyal, tender, and charming.

In zodiac tradition, the Horse is said to be most compatible with the Tiger, Goat, and Dog, while pairings with the Rat, Ox, and Rabbit are thought to be more challenging. Compatibility is related to shared traits such as passion or high energy.

Of course, zodiac personalities and compatibilities are not meant to define you. They are more of a cultural tool to reflect on. Learning about zodiac traits is a fun way to reflect on personality and connect with others who share your birth year.

What is the Fire Horse?

Each year corresponds not only to an animal but also to an element: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. While each animal zodiac rotates every 12 years, each element is represented in the last digit of the year. In 2026, we celebrate the Fire Horse, since the Fire element appears in years ending with 6 or 7.

Just as each animal year has a personality and meaning behind them, each elemental year carries special meaning. The Fire Year represents passion, creativity, and persistence. It means this year will be one of motivation and enthusiasm.  This year means taking action to push your comfort zone or go beyond your limits.

Fire Horses are known for their independence, but that doesn't mean they can’t form close romantic and familial bonds. In fact, their independence often makes them even more loyal and committed to the people they care about.

Overall, the Year of the Fire Horse invites us to embrace energy, passion, and independence while honoring the cultural traditions behind the Lunar New Year. Whether you personally identify with the traits of the Horse or simply enjoy learning about zodiac stories and symbolism, this year offers an opportunity for reflection, motivation, and growth. The zodiac can help give us the confidence to pursue our passions and transform ourselves. As the Fire Horse charges forward, it encourages us all to move boldly, pursue personal goals, and strengthen our relationships to ourselves and our loved ones.
